Opera & Art in Milan

Milan’s La Scala is the most famous opera house in the world. Opened in 1778 on the site of a church, it has played host to some of the greatest singers including Renata Tebaldi and Maria Callas. Verdi trained at La Scala; Otello, Falstaff and Nabucco were premiered here. Famous house conductors include Toscanini, Abbado and Barenboim.

Itinerary


DAY 1

This tour begins at the hotel. We meet at the Hotel de la Ville (4* Superior) close to the Duomo and La Scala in the centre of Milan. The hotel has a good restaurant and a roof garden with heated swimming pool. A welcome reception will be followed by a city tour and dinner in the hotel.

DAY 2

This morning we visit the colossal Duomo - the largest Gothic cathedral in Italy. Next, we visit the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper in the church’s refectory. An opera talk is followed by an early dinner before we make our way to La Scala for tonight’s performance of Donizetti’s Elisir d’amore.

DAY 3

The day begins with a visit to the Casa Verdi, a home for retired musicians, followed by a visit to the La Scala Museum with its fascinating collection of opera memorabilia. The Brera Academy, one of the finest Italian galleries, will be visited in the afternoon. Dinner at the hotel followed by a performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto.

DAY 4

Today we visit the Castello Sforzesco, the fortress of Milan, with its fine museums including work by Michelangelo and Leonardo. Later we visit the Romanesque Basilica Sant’Ambrogio which dates from the 4th century. There will be time for relaxation and to visit the Galleria.

DAY 5

Check out willbe after breakfast.
There is a good range of inexpensive flights from the UK to Milan and Linate airport is an easy journey to the city. We will be happy help with travel arrangements.
