Opera & Ballet in Paris

Rene Jacobs directs the Paris Opera in Scarlatti’s Cain, overo Il primo omicidio at the Palais Garnier. The Monte-Carlo Ballet and orchestra’s tribute to the spirit of Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes including works by Ravel, Weber, Debussy and Stravinsky’s Petrouchka at the Theatre des Champs Elysees. Dvorak’s fairytale opera Rusalka and Berlioz’s epic Le Troyens are performed in this the thirtieth anniversary year of the opening of the Opera Bastille.

Opera & Ballet in Leeds

We stay at the art deco Queens Hotel in Leeds for three nights of opera with Opera North with a double-bill night including Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring with the internationally-renowned Pheonix Dance Theatre.

The Ring in Geneva

Wagner’s Ring Cycle in the newly restored Grand Theatre

The Orchestra of the Suisse Romande conducted by Georg Fritzsch in Dieter Dorn’s acclaimed production. Opera de Geneve marks its return to the Grand Theatre after an absence of three years. Petra Lang is Brunhilde, Tómas Tómasson is Wotan with Michael Weinius as Siegfried. The cycle of four music dramas is spread over six days allowing two free days for sightseeing and visits along the lake. Guests may wish to travel on board the Golden-Pass panoramic train to Gstaad and Interlaken, visit Montreux or even The Geneva Motor Show.

Berlin Festtage

Mahler’s 1st Symphony ∙ Betrothal in a Monastery ∙ Die Meistersinger

Daniel Barenboim conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Mahler’s First Symphony for the opening concert at the Philharmonie. The musical feast continues at the Staatsoper with performances of Prokofiev’s lively, virtuosic comedy. Set in Seville it includes references to Mozart and Rossini in its highly theatrical, yet lyrical style. Wagner’s epic masterpiece, a celebration of music and love, with its extraordinary tonal splendour forms the astonishing climax of our visit.

Opera in Wales

Un ballo in maschera ∙ The Magic Flute ∙ Roberto Devereux

We visit Llandudno for three operas at the Venue Cymru – a superb auditorium on the stunning coast of North Wales.

Welsh National Opera’s Spring Season includes a new production by David Pountney of Verdi’s opera based on the assignation of Gustav III of Sweden. Donizetti’s powerful story of the renunciation of love is filled with spine-tingling melodies in a dramatic staging based on designs by Vivienne Westwood. Mozart’s enigmatic and ever popular and irresistible Magic Flute completes the trio of operas.

We will stay at the magnificent St George’s Hotel on the waterfront and there will be opportunities for a visit to Bodnant Gardens and Conwy with time in the afternoons for walking on the Great Orme or the coastal paths.

Llandudno is easily accessible by rail with direct trains from Manchester, Chester, London and the Midlands.

The Ring in Leipzig

Rosamund Gilmore’s Leipzig Ring Cycle was highly acclaimed in 2016 and is now firmly established in the repertoire. Ulf Schirmer conducts the Leipzig Opera and Gewandhaus Orchestra. Leipzig is, of course, the city of Wagner’s birth and it was the first city to perform The Ring after its premiere at Bayreuth. It is also the city of Bach, Mendelssohn and the Schumanns. We will visit the museums and places which celebrate their remarkable creative output.

Opera Week in Prague

A fabulous week in Prague with five operas at three theatres. This tour is ideal for those new to opera and for more experienced opera goers. Prague is a magical city and we tour some of its greatest treasures alongside evenings at the opera. Gounod’s sumptuous Romeo and Juliette followed by La Traviata and Carmen contrast with Prokofiev’s popular Love of Three Oranges. We end the week with a performance of The Marriage of Figaro at the original Estates Theatre where Mozart first conducted it on his visit to Prague in 1787.

Opera & Wine in Verona

Three exceptional operas set in the fabulous Roman Arena. Staying at the Hotel Accademia in the heart of the old city and close to the Piazza Bra we enjoy three nights of spectacle under the stars. The atmosphere in the Arena is one of near tangible magic and is one of the great cultural events of the Italian summer. Aida in the historic 1913 production is followed by La Traviata and Il Trovatore with Anna Netrebko singing the part of Leonora.
